WHAT IS IN SEAWEED that makes it so incredible / epic / amazing / have that wow factor? As a consumer, we are bombarded with hundreds of supplement products daily that promote or state how they will cure, support, fix, help, ease and reduce whatever aliment that we may have at the time. Our Seaweed Supplement has to stack up and compete with the hundreds of products that grace the health food shelves globally and well as online!
Lately, I been asked “why should I be taking Seaweed / your Seaweed Supplements”? So, this month I wanted to highlight some key elements that make up our seaweed - that really can have an impact on your health / healing.
Let's break this down for you to fully understand what it is that is in seaweed - Why is Seaweed So Good for You?:
Iodine - The iodine that is naturally occurring in seaweed is one of the best food sources of iodine - (other sources are eggs, fish and milk - please note sea salt does not contain iodine). The natural iodine in seaweed is absorbed slowly and excreted if and when needed. This creates a more stable, steady supply of iodine for the thyroid gland. Seaweed also provides many more nutrients than just iodine, offering a wider range of health benefits than salt or other multi-vitamins / specific supplements. Iodine is a mineral that ensures the thyroid gland functions properly. The thyroid gland is in the neck which produces hormones that regulate your heart, metabolism and cognitive abilities. Iodine also plays an important role in the physical and mental development in early life - suitable for pregnant and breast feeding women.
Here are 10 signs and symptoms of iodine deficiency:
Swelling in the Neck. Swelling in the front of the neck is the most common symptom of an iodine deficiency
Unexpected Weight Gain
Fatigue and Weakness
Hair loss
Dry, Flaky Skin
Feeling Colder Than Usual
Changes in Heart Rate
Trouble Learning and Remembering
NB: Many of our foods we eat don’t contain iodine, many food producers are now incorporating iodine into their products.
B Vitamins - vitamins B-2 (or riboflavin), B-9 (or folate/folic acid), B-12Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep the body's nerve and blood cells healthy and helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. Vitamin B12 also helps prevent a type of anemia called megaloblastic anemia that makes people tired and weak. Two steps are required for the body to absorb vitamin B12 from food.
Calcium - Our seaweed contains a very good level of calcium. Calcium helps maintain the proper function of the heart, muscles, nerves and body systems, and helps build strong bones and teeth.
Fibre - The fiber in brown seaweed can promote digestive health while warding off constipation. One study also showed that a high seaweed intake can increase the good bacteria in the gut. Fibre can also assist in supporting in weight loss - fibre, which increases fullness and curbs your appetite!. "Seaweed is low in fat but packed with soluble fiber, which helps control blood sugar levels and keeps your bowels moving." (self.com/story/3-reasons-to-eat-seaweed-its-g)

I have just highlighted a few elements that really stand out and have such an impact on our inner health - more so than any other marine or land vegetable. Macrocystis seaweed contains over 50 minerals and vitamins - plus trace elements like Fucoidan (Which I will talk more about this amazing trace element at a later date)
A couple of key facts: Seaweed contains far more nutritional components that any other marine or land vegetable. Macrocystis Seaweed is the fastest growing organism on the planet - growing up to 30cm a day! Can you believe this!. This another ‘why’ seaweed can help with the support of sensational skin, hair and eyes and eye health.
Lastly: Seaweed is a great way to the body in flushing/ridding toxins from our body. How does it do this? Seaweed detoxifies from the inside out. So consuming seaweed is a fantastic way to eliminate toxins such as metals and chemicals in our body. Seaweed removes fats and toxins from the body and helps protect the liver from toxic damage. The sodium alginate in seaweed, especially kelp, absorbs toxins from the digestive tract. Ridding toxins from our body, from our environment is probably easier said than done. We are surrounded by daily toxins, environmental noise and foods that can often cause our guts discomfort - in one way or another.
NB: Don't be fooled by cheap seaweed imitations / similar products that add various fillers or whatever's into their so-called health capsule. It really is important to know where your seaweed is sourced from ... seaweed loves beautiful marine nutrients / but it also picks up various toxins and contaminants from the water as well. lt's important to know where our product comes from and how it is produced and manufactured. Take a closer look at where others are sourcing their seaweed from!
